What F2 means

F2 means two different things on Whirlpool microwaves. On over-the-range models such as WMH31017HS, WMH32519HZ and WMH53521HZ, the keypad, also called the user interface, reported a problem to the control board, and the keypad or its wiring may be involved. On built-in microwaves and microwave drawers, such as WMC50522AS, F2 points to the oven temperature sensor, the control, or the wiring. The display shows F2 and the oven may not respond or heat.

Common causes of F2

  • Over-the-range: keypad or user interface and its wiring
  • Built-in: oven temperature sensor
  • Control board and wiring on either platform
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn off the breaker for the microwave and leave it off for one minute. 2. Turn the breaker on again. 3. Watch the microwave for one minute to check that F2 does not return. 4. Try the keypad and run a short cycle. 5. If F2 returns, stop using the oven.

! Why to stop there
  • We identify which platform you have, since a keypad test and a sensor test are different jobs.
  • After a reset, a code that returns means a lasting circuit problem, not a one-time glitch.
  • We explain the finding and quote a written price before work.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F2F2 questions
Why does F2 have two meanings?

Over-the-range models use it for the keypad. Built-in models use it for the oven temperature sensor circuit. The platform tells us which circuit to test.

Can I treat plain F2 like F2 E1?

No. F2 E1 is a separate built-in code naming the user interface or keypad and control. Plain F2 on a built-in points to the temperature sensor.

Can you repair an older microwave with F2?

Yes. We repair older units, give you a written price first, and say plainly when a repair is not worth it. Completed repairs carry our 30-day workmanship warranty.
