What Lo or Pre means
Lo and Pre are normal readings, not errors, on a Whirlpool freestanding or slide-in range such as the WFE515S0ES or WFG525S0HV. After you turn the oven on, Lo means the oven is still below 170 degrees F, and Pre means it is preheating. On some models, once the oven reaches 170 degrees the display switches to the actual temperature and climbs in steps of 5 degrees. When the set temperature is reached, a tone sounds. Nothing about it points to a problem.
Common causes of Lo or Pre
- Oven still warming up to its set temperature
- Oven below the display's lowest readout
- Normal behavior rather than a failing part
1. Give the oven time to warm up with the door closed. 2. Watch for the display to change from Lo or Pre to a temperature reading. 3. Wait for the tone that signals the set temperature has been reached. 4. Check your Owner's Manual if your model shows something different. 5. Call us only if the temperature never appears or the oven stays cool.
- If the display stays on Lo or Pre far longer than a preheat should take, the oven may not be heating, and we test that
- An oven that is slow to climb can point to the heat circuit or temperature sensing, which we check in person
- We give a written price before any work, and you are not asked to open anything

Is Lo on my range display an error?
No. Lo simply shows the oven is below 170 degrees F, and Pre shows it is preheating. The reading changes to a real temperature as the oven climbs, and a tone sounds at the set temperature.
How long should I wait before worrying?
A normal preheat lets the display move on to actual temperatures. If it stays on Lo or Pre and the oven never gets hot, the heating circuit needs a look. Tell us what you observed when you call.
Do you repair older ovens that will not leave Lo?
Yes. Ovens of this type that are well past their warranty years are a regular part of our work. We quote in writing first, give a 30-day workmanship warranty, and say plainly if a repair is not worthwhile.
Still unsure about Lo or Pre?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
