Whirlpool Dishwasher Past Ten Years: When a Repair Still Pays Off

Dishwashers wear out slowly, and a repair on a ten-year-old Whirlpool can still make sense. Here is how to judge the tub, the pump and the racks first.

A Whirlpool dishwasher that is ten or more years old is not automatically finished. The decision rests on the condition of the tub and the pump, because those are the parts that are costly to replace.

Parts that repair well

  • Door latch and door switch, when the cycle will not start
  • Drain pump and drain hose, when water stays behind
  • Inlet valve, when the tub fills slowly or not at all
  • Spray arm and its bearings, when dishes are poorly washed
  • Door gasket, when water seeps along the bottom edge

Signs that point toward replacement

  • Rust flaking from the tub walls, not just the rack tips
  • A leak from the base of the tub rather than the door
  • A pump that has been replaced once already and is noisy again
  • Several unrelated parts failing within a year

What cannot be judged from home

A wet floor in front of the dishwasher might be the door gasket, a loose hose clamp or a cracked sump. From the owner’s description we cannot tell which, and the answer changes the advice completely. A gasket is a small job. A cracked tub is the end of the machine.

Before booking, remove the lower rack, look inside the tub with a flashlight, and note whether any rust is bare metal or only on the rack. Tell us what you see; it helps us bring the right parts.

A useful rule of thumb: if the dishwasher still cleans well when it runs and only one part is failing, a repair is reasonable. If cleaning has been weak for a long time, the wear is probably wider than one part.

We tell you if a repair is not worth it, and the price is written down before we begin. Details are on the dishwasher repair page. If you are unsure whether we reach your neighborhood, the service area page lists every county.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
