What F3E5 means
On Whirlpool WED / WGD electric and gas dryers, including Cabrio and Duet, F3E5 is a moisture sensor code. The dryer sets it after five loads in a row finish without any moisture sensor data being registered. The sensor is a pair of metal strips inside the drum that clothes touch as they tumble, and the control uses them to judge dryness. Pressing POWER clears the code so you can run again, but a code that repeats means the dryer is not sensing damp clothes.
Common causes of F3E5
- Metal sensor strips coated with fabric softener or residue
- Dryer not level, so clothes miss the strips
- Wiring from the strips to the control
- Small or light loads that rarely touch the sensor
1. Press POWER to clear F3E5 and restart the dryer. 2. Check that the dryer is level, front to back and side to side. 3. Wipe the metal strips in the drum with a damp cloth and dry them. 4. If the code persists, switch off the breaker for one minute, switch it on, run a timed dry cycle and watch for a minute.
- Residue, levelness and the sensor circuit all give the same reading
- We test the sensor strips and their wiring after the simple checks are done
- The price is in writing before work, and our repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Dryer codes
What triggers F3E5?
Five consecutive loads dried without any moisture reading from the sensor strips. It often follows a leveling issue or coated strips, which stop clothes from making a proper contact.
Can I dry on a timed cycle while this is unresolved?
Usually yes. A timed dry cycle does not rely on the moisture sensing the same way, so it keeps clothes drying. We still advise a visit if F3E5 returns after cleaning the strips.
Is F3E5 different from F3E2?
On WED / WGD dryers both are described as the moisture sensor not registering data. The number separates two reading states, and the checks we run are the same: strips, levelness, wiring.
