What E3 means
E3 shows up on Whirlpool electric and gas dryers in the WED and WGD series, Cabrio and Duet generations included, such as the WED75HEFW, and the brand's guidance names no part for it, only a power reset. The same characters on the washer side of the older stacked laundry center mean an unbalanced load alarm, which does not apply to a dryer. On a dryer, E3 is a control-level code that we diagnose by testing the dryer.
Common causes of E3
- Control board and connections
- Wiring harness to the control
- A short-lived error that clears with power removed
- Sensor input into the control
1. Turn the dryer's circuit breaker or breakers off for 5 minutes. 2. Turn them on again. 3. Start a time dry cycle. 4. Check on the dryer for one minute to be sure the code does not reappear. 5. If E3 comes back, leave the dryer off and call us.
- A reset only shows whether the error was passing, not what caused it
- Board, wiring, and sensor inputs all look the same on the display
- We narrow it down by testing, then quote the repair in writing before work
Other Dryer codes
Is E3 an unbalanced load on a dryer?
No. An unbalanced alarm is what E3 means on the washer side of the older stacked laundry center. A dryer has no such alarm, and its E3 has no published cause.
What if E3 disappears after the reset?
Then it may have been a one-off glitch. Keep an eye on the next few loads, and if E3 returns, the control path needs a proper test.
Do you repair older dryers with E3?
Yes. We repair dryers of this kind that are many years old, and we say plainly when a repair is not worth it, with the price in writing first.
Still seeing E3?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
