What E2 means
Whirlpool electric and gas dryers in the WED and WGD series, Cabrio and Duet generations included, can show E2 on the display, as on the WGD5000DW. The brand gives only a power-down routine and names no part. A caution about the same characters: on the older stacked laundry center, E2 on the washer side is a draining alarm, which is not what the dryer is reporting. On the dryer, E2 means the control flagged something that needs testing.
Common causes of E2
- Control board and connectors
- Harness leading to the control
- A passing error that a full power-down clears
- Input circuit the control monitors
1. Switch off the breaker or breakers feeding the dryer and wait 5 minutes. 2. Switch them back on. 3. Run a timed dry cycle. 4. Remain nearby for one minute to see whether E2 returns. 5. If it does, do not keep restarting. Call us.
- The published routine is only a reset, so a returning E2 needs real testing
- The display does not separate a board issue from a wiring one
- We test the control path and quote in writing before replacing anything
Other Dryer codes
Is E2 a drain problem on my dryer?
No. A draining alarm is what E2 means on the washer side of an older stacked laundry center. A dryer does not drain water, and its E2 has no published cause.
Do I need an electrician for the breaker reset?
No. You only switch the dryer's breaker or breakers off and on at the panel. Do not open the dryer itself. If the code returns, we take it from there.
Will a reset hide the real issue?
It can, for a while. If E2 comes back, the control path still needs testing, and we explain the findings before you decide on any repair.
Still seeing E2?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
