RC8900XAB
Whirlpool RC8900XAB Downdraft Cooktop Repair
Most common issues on this model
- Downdraft blower and vent opening
- Duct run and exterior damper
- Grease filter and the vent slot
- Surface elements and switches
The RC8900XAB is a Whirlpool 36-inch electric downdraft cooktop. It is also sold as RC8900XAB0, RC8900XAH0 and RC8900XAQ0. Instead of a hood, it pulls cooking fumes down through a vent beside the elements and out through a duct under the floor or behind the cabinet.
That vent is why this type needs two checks. One is the heating side: elements, switches and wiring. The other is the ventilation: the blower, its switch, the filter, the duct and the exterior damper. Grease builds up on a downdraft filter fast, and a stuck damper or a crushed duct leaves the room smoky even when the blower runs.
It is an older model that many Houston owners keep in an island kitchen. We read the full model and serial from the label before ordering, give a written price before work, and add a 30-day workmanship warranty.

Error codes this model can show
The downdraft fan on my RC8900XAB is loud or weak. What do you check?
We clean the filter, then test the blower and its switch, and look at the duct and exterior damper. A weak draw often means restricted airflow, not a dead motor.
Does the cooktop need an outside duct?
A downdraft cooktop of this type pushes air through a duct to the outdoors. We inspect the run for crushing, grease and a stuck damper.
Can you repair the heating side and the vent in one visit?
Usually yes, if parts are on hand. We test both and give one written price covering what we find. Both sides are separate circuits, so we test them one after the other.
