What F means
A Whirlpool vent hood shows an F while the fan is running once it has logged 30 hours of fan operation. This is a cleaning reminder for the metal grease filters, not an error code. Grease collects on the filters faster than it does on charcoal ones, which is why the reminder arrives sooner. The hood still works, and the F simply stays on the display until you reset it.
Common causes of F
- Grease filter reached its 30-hour reminder
- Filters heavily coated with cooking grease
1. Take out the metal grease filters. 2. Wash them in the dishwasher or in a hot detergent solution. 3. Let them dry thoroughly before putting them back. 4. Press and hold FAN for 3 seconds so the F disappears. 5. Run the fan briefly to see that the F stays off.
- Clean filters do not clear the reminder by themselves, as the count must be reset.
- If F comes straight back, we check the control and the fan speeds.
- The price is written before work, and our repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Range Hood codes
What does the F on my vent hood mean?
It tells you the grease filters are due for washing after 30 hours of fan use. It is a maintenance reminder and does not point to a failed part.
Do I have to wash the filters to clear it?
The reset itself only needs FAN held for 3 seconds. We still suggest washing, because filters full of grease pull less air and add to the cooking smell.
Is F related to the C that some hoods show?
Both are reminders. F is for grease filters and C is for charcoal ones. Each has its own hour count and its own reset. Washing the grease filters never clears the charcoal count.
Still unsure about F?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
