What Lock means
Lock on a Whirlpool electric radiant smoothtop cooktop means the Control Lock is active. It prevents unintended use of the cooking areas. If the lock was set while power to the cooktop was off, the cooking areas cannot be turned on from the touch controls at all. If it was set while power was on, every key is locked except Power and Off. It is a user setting, not a problem with the cooktop.
Common causes of Lock
- Control Lock was switched on, perhaps by a touch or while cleaning
- The lock stayed set through a power-off
- If the unlock does not work: the touch control
1. Touch and hold LOCK for 3 seconds to unlock the cooktop. 2. Try turning on a cooking area. 3. If the lock will not release, cycle the breaker: off for a minute, then on. 4. Check operation of a cooking area afterward. 5. See the owner's manual for your model's control details.
- If a 3-second hold and a power reset do not release it, the lock key or control may not respond.
- We test the touch keys and the control.
- The price is written before work starts, and we say plainly if an older cooktop is not worth repairing.
Other Cooktop codes
How do I unlock my cooktop?
Touch and hold the LOCK key for 3 seconds. The lock icon should go out and the cooking areas respond to touch again.
Why can I not turn on any burner?
If Control Lock was set while the cooktop was off, the cooking areas cannot be started from the touch controls until you unlock it.
Can I leave the lock on for kids?
Yes, it is meant to prevent unintended use. Remember the lock does not cool a hot surface, so keep children away from a hot cooktop.
Still unsure about Lock?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
