What Indicator or Display Flashing means

A flashing indicator or display on a Whirlpool cooktop has two meanings depending on the type. On a smoothtop, it means one or more keys are being read as permanently pressed, usually from objects or debris on the touch area. On an induction cooktop, a flashing U with the power level means the pan is the wrong type or size, or is off center, until a pan is detected or the zone is turned off.

Common causes of Indicator or Display Flashing

  • Smoothtop: an object, spill or residue on the control panel
  • Smoothtop: a touch key that stays pressed
  • Induction: a pan that is not magnetic, is too small or is off center
  • Induction: a very hot pan that needs to cool
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Make sure the cooktop controls are off. 2. Remove anything left on the control area and wipe debris off the panel. 3. Clean the touch control panel thoroughly. 4. On induction, check the pan is magnetic, large enough and centered on the cooking area. 5. Let a hot pan cool, then switch the cooking area off and on again.

! Why to stop there
  • If the flashing continues on a clean, empty panel, a key may be reading as pressed on its own.
  • We test the touch keys and the control behind them.
  • You approve a written price first, and we say plainly when a repair is not worth it.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Indicator or Display FlashingIndicator or Display Flashing questions
Why is my cooktop display flashing?

On a smoothtop it usually means something is pressing the touch area, like a spill or a utensil. On induction it often means the pan is unsuitable or off center.

Will cleaning the panel stop the flashing?

Often, yes. Wipe it thoroughly with the controls off. If the flashing continues on a clean panel, a key may be stuck in the control, which needs testing.

How do I know if my pan works on induction?

A magnet should stick firmly to the bottom, and the pan must be wide enough for the zone. If U keeps flashing, try a different pan before calling.
