What F4 means

F4 on a Whirlpool electric radiant smoothtop cooktop with touch controls means a pot or pan is sitting too close to the control panel. The cooktop reads the heat or contact near the touch area as a problem and shows the code instead of heating normally. You will see F4 on the display, and the surface cooking area may stop heating until the panel clears. It is most often a placement issue rather than a repair.

Common causes of F4

  • A hot pan or utensil resting near or on the touch control panel
  • A pan that is not centered on the cooking area
  • Heat or residue left on the control glass after cooking
  • If the code returns with the panel clear: the control circuit and its wiring
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn all controls off and move the pot or pan away from the cooktop. 2. Make sure nothing hot is lying on the touch control panel. 3. Wait 5 minutes for the control panel to clear. 4. Cut power to the cooktop at its breaker for a minute, then restore it. 5. Keep an eye on the readout for a minute. Center the pan on the cooking area when you cook again.

! Why to stop there
  • If F4 comes back with an empty, cool cooktop, the cause is no longer pan placement.
  • We test the touch control and its wiring to see whether it is reading a false contact.
  • You get the written price before we start, and the repair carries our 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F4F4 questions
Why does my cooktop show F4 when I am cooking?

A pan or something hot is too close to the touch control panel. Slide it toward the center of the cooking area, let the panel cool for about 5 minutes, and the code should clear.

Is F4 dangerous?

No. It is a protective message about placement near the controls. Keep hot items off the panel and let the glass cool before wiping it. If it keeps appearing on a clear cooktop, have us look at the controls.

Does an older cooktop show F4 more often?

Controls on older glass tops can become sensitive to heat and moisture over the years. We still repair them and tell you plainly if a repair no longer makes sense.
