What F2 means

F2 on a Whirlpool electric radiant (smoothtop) cooktop, such as the WCE97US0KS, says a surface cooking area is too hot. Take the pans off the area and the code should disappear once the surface has cooled. If you turn the burner back on and F2 reappears, the area is still too hot, so switch it off again and wait. A code that never clears after cooling is a different matter.

Common causes of F2

  • Surface cooking area still hot from earlier use
  • Pan left to overheat on a burner
  • Heat sensing that reads high after cool-down
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the burner off and remove the pans. 2. Let the surface cool until the code goes out. 3. If F2 stays, turn the breaker off for one minute and on again. 4. Wait one minute and see whether it reappears. 5. Cook on a lower setting from now on.

! Why to stop there
  • If F2 still shows on a cold surface, we test the heat sensing for that area.
  • We look at whether a burner is staying on after you turn it off.
  • We give the price in writing first, and our repairs have a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F2F2 questions
Does F2 mean something is broken?

Usually not. It is a hot-surface message that fades as the glass cools, and it only matters if it stays after the surface is cold.

Why does it come back when I turn the burner on again?

The area has not cooled enough. Turn it off and give it more time before you restart, since a hot surface will bring the code straight back.

What would make F2 stay on a cold cooktop?

A sensor that reads wrongly, or a burner that is not switching off. We test both, and the second is something we want fixed quickly.
