What “d E” means
The message “d E” with every burner off means demo mode is switched on. This applies to Whirlpool electric radiant (smoothtop) cooktops and to induction models such as the WCI55US0JS. In demo mode the display and keypad respond, but the cooktop does not heat and the cooking functions never come on. It is a setting rather than a damaged part, and it can be turned off by the owner.
Common causes of “d E”
- Demo mode switched on, often after power was cut and restored
- A keypad press that was held during power-up
- Control that will not leave demo mode after the owner's steps
1. Confirm the burners are off and the display shows “d E”. 2. Turn the cooktop's power off at the breaker, then back on. 3. Within the first minute after power returns, press and hold the bottom left Booster (quick heating) key for 5 seconds. 4. Check that the display clears and the burners respond. 5. On the induction model, use the same Booster press to switch demo mode off.
- If the Booster press does nothing, we check whether the keypad is registering touches at all.
- We confirm the cooktop heats normally once demo mode is cleared, so you are not left with a hidden problem.
- The price is in writing before work starts, and our repairs have a 30-day workmanship warranty.

Why won't my cooktop heat when it shows “d E”?
Demo mode lets the display and keys work for show purposes only. Power is not sent to the burners, so nothing heats until the mode is switched off.
How do I turn demo mode off?
Restore power, then within the first minute hold the Booster key at the bottom left of the keypad for 5 seconds. The same steps work on both smoothtop and induction models.
I missed the one-minute window. What now?
Cut the breaker again and repeat. The press only works right after power returns. If it still fails after a few tries, call us and we check the keypad.
