What Start/Resume means
On older Whirlpool portable dishwashers, on select models, a flashing Start/Resume light shows that the cycle or its start-up was interrupted. That happens if the door was opened during the cycle, if the power was interrupted, or if the door was not closed within 3 seconds of pressing Start/Resume. An audible tone may sound as well. This older style is still common, and we repair these machines.
Common causes of Start/Resume
- Door opened during the cycle
- Brief power interruption
- Door not pushed shut within 3 seconds of pressing Start/Resume
- Door latch or switch not registering
1. Push the door firmly closed within 3 seconds of pressing Start/Resume. 2. If the light still flashes, cycle the power to reset the control: unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. 3. For a hard-wired unit, turn off the breaker for 30 seconds, then on. 4. Start the cycle again and close the door promptly.
- If the door is shut in time and the light still flashes, the latch or door switch may not be registering
- Repeated power interruptions in the home can look like a dishwasher problem
- We test the latch circuit, say plainly if a repair is not worth it, and quote in writing first

Why does Start/Resume flash after I press it?
The cycle or its start-up was interrupted. Often the door was not shut within 3 seconds of pressing Start/Resume, or the power dropped for a moment during the run.
Do I need to start over after an interruption?
Press Start/Resume and close the door firmly within 3 seconds. If the cycle still will not continue, unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds to reset the control, then begin the cycle again.
What if the door is closed and it keeps flashing?
Then the door latch or switch may not be sensing the door. We test it on a visit, and you see a written price before we repair anything.
