My chest freezer feels warm on the outside. Is something wrong?
Not necessarily. Many chest freezers warm their outer walls on purpose to keep moisture from forming at the seal. A freezer that feels warm and also fails to keep food hard is a different matter, and we test the temperature and the start parts.
Can food be refrozen after a freezer stopped?
Food that still has ice crystals, or that stayed below about 40 degrees, can usually be refrozen, though quality drops. Food that sat warm for hours should be thrown away. When in doubt, use a food thermometer and discard what is questionable.
Why is there so much frost inside my upright freezer?
Frost usually builds from warm, humid air getting in, often through a worn gasket or a door left open. On frost-free models, a failed defrost system can also bury the evaporator. We check the seal first because it is the cheaper repair.
