Whirlpool Water Heater Sediment: Why Older Tanks Rumble and How Flushing Helps

A tank water heater that rumbles or runs out of hot water early may be carrying sediment. Here is what flushing does, and what it cannot fix.

Houston water carries minerals that settle at the bottom of a water heater tank. In an older tank, that layer can grow thick, which causes rumbling noises, slower recovery and extra strain on the heating parts.

What sediment does

  • It insulates the water from the burner or lower element, so heating takes longer.
  • It traps water that boils and pops, producing a rumbling sound.
  • It can clog the drain valve, making a flush difficult.

Flushing, in brief

  1. Cut power at the breaker; on a gas unit, move the control to pilot or off.
  2. Shut the cold water valve above the heater.
  3. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and lead it outdoors or to a floor drain.
  4. Open one hot faucet indoors, then the drain valve, and let the tank empty.
  5. Briefly open the supply to stir the remaining sediment out, then close the drain and refill before restoring power.

Always refill the tank fully before turning the power or gas back on. A heating element running dry fails fast.

What flushing cannot do

It does not repair a leaking tank, a failed element or a thermostat that has drifted. On a tank that has not been flushed in years, the drain valve may jam or leak after opening; if so, stop and let us look at it.

Gas and plumbing limits

We repair the water heater itself. Gas line work and new installations that need a licensed plumber are referred to one.

Water heaters also have an anode rod that slowly wears away to protect the tank. An old tank with a spent rod rusts faster, which is one more reason age matters when you decide between repair and replacement.

If the tank is old and the noise persists, we can inspect it and explain the choices. Read more on the water heater repair page. Your city and county are listed on the service area page.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
