Whirlpool Range Display Dead or Buttons Dead After a Storm Surge

Storm surges and brownouts can damage an electronic range control. Here is how to reset safely, what a dead display may mean, and how to protect the next one.

After a thunderstorm or a power flicker, a range may show a blank screen or ignore the buttons. Sometimes a reset fixes it, but a surge can also damage the control board.

A safe reset

  1. Turn off every burner and the oven.
  2. Switch off the range’s breaker in the panel for about a minute, then back on.
  3. Wait for the display to start up and set the clock.
  4. Test one burner and the oven with a short cycle, staying in the kitchen.

What the signs may mean

  • A clock that resets only after an outage is normal.
  • A display with missing segments or a repeating code suggests a damaged board.
  • A burner that turns on by itself, or a control that responds to nothing, should be left off at the breaker until it has been checked.
  • A burning smell or sparking is a reason to cut the breaker and stop using the range.

What cannot be concluded

A dead display may be a bad board, a failed power connection inside the range, or a house wiring issue. A reset helps only the first of those in rare cases. We check the supply voltage at the range before replacing anything.

Protecting the next range

Surge protection at the panel can reduce risk. Ask a licensed electrician about a whole-home protector; we do not do house wiring.

Older ranges often have parts that are still available. If the board is no longer sold, we will say so before the repair is attempted.

Photograph the control panel before and after the reset. If anything changes, such as a stuck button or missing digits, you will have a clear record to describe on the phone.

Tell us what the display shows and whether a code appears. Details are on the range repair page. If you are unsure whether we reach your neighborhood, the service area page lists every county.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
