What Probe or Insert Probe means

Whirlpool built-in wall ovens, including single, double and microwave-combination models like the WOS51EC0HS, display Probe or Insert Probe when you choose a probe cook and the control cannot detect the meat probe. The control is waiting for a signal from the probe, so it will not start that cycle. This usually points to the probe plug, the jack in the oven, or a probe that is not placed in the food.

Common causes of Probe or Insert Probe

  • Probe not fully seated in the jack
  • Probe tip not placed in the food
  • The probe itself or its cord
  • The jack or wiring on the oven side
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Let the oven cool, then push the probe plug all the way into the jack. 2. Insert the probe into the center of the thickest part of the food. 3. For meat with a bone, keep the tip away from the bone. 4. If it still asks, turn the oven's breaker off for one minute and back on. 5. Keep an eye on the screen for a minute.

! Why to stop there
  • A probe that looks fine can still lose contact inside the plug.
  • We check whether the oven reads the probe at the jack, before anything is replaced.
  • The price is written before work, and our repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Probe or Insert ProbeProbe or Insert Probe questions
Why does the oven ask for the probe when I did not want to use it?

A probe cook may have been selected by mistake. Press Cancel and pick a regular bake instead. The message only matters if you want to cook with the probe.

How far should the probe go in?

Place it in the center of the thickest part of the food, away from bone. The plug must be fully pushed into the jack, or the control will not see it.

Could the jack be damaged?

It can wear after years of use. We test the jack and the probe separately, so you do not pay for the wrong one. Cleaning around the jack with the oven cold is also safe to try.
